Spirit of the Ocean Foundation status: fund raising

Over the past 80 years water damage and surface wear has occurred due to weather and use by the general public. The result is irreversible damage to this one-of-a-kind work of art. The fountain is in critical need of a complete replacement.

To date the Courthouse Legacy Foundation has raised $131,500 in donations toward the estimated $410,000 it will take to replace the fountain. Additionally the Foundation has secured a commitment for an in-kind donation of the sandstone block worth approximately $120,000. Estimated costs include an array of craftsman including stone carvers, electricians, plumbers, and tile workers. Amount still needed is $158,500. This project is expected take about nine months to complete.

Historic Structures Report. status: fund raising

An Historic Structures Report (HSR) is necessary for evaluation of needs and priorities for preservation projects at the courthouse. The Courthouse Legacy Foundation (CLF) has a quote from specialists in historic structures preservation analysis for performance of the assessment and report at $102,000. The HSR will be necessary for long-term preservation analysis and planning. CLF has scheduled the HSR work to begin in 2009, but still needs approximately $68,500 for the HSR.

Main Foyer Painted Ceiling status: fund raising

The main foyer of the courthouse is located near the main entryway where thousands of tourists first enter the courthouse. This room is located just off the Main Arch adjacent to the stairs and elevator leading to the observation deck of the Clock Tower. The ceiling of this room is decorated with ornate mudejar artwork. This ceiling detail is faded and chipping in areas. This project will bring back the original detail and luster of these painted mudejar ceilings. Cost is roughly estimated at $50,000.

Figueroa Painted Ceiling status: fund raising

The Figueroa entrance is located on the South Side of the Courthouse. The ceiling of this room is decorated with ornate mudejar artwork. This ceiling detail is faded and chipping in areas. This project will bring back the original detail and luster of these painted mudejar ceilings. Cost is roughly estimated at $50,000.

Stonework: Lawyers Entrance status: fund raising

There is considerable work necessary at this location: flatwork at the stone steps, repair of stone archway, and repair of the tower, including repair of the stone freeze and repair/replacement of the four finial elements at the corners of the tower and replacement of the epee in the center of the tower.

Mural Room status: fund raising

In 80 years no significant preservation of the murals has occurred. The murals painted on 6,700 square feet of muslin canvas need to be cleaned and restored. Other areas in need of attention include original wooden furniture, ceiling paint, draperies, and ironwork. The cost of this project is roughly estimated at $750,000.

Main Arch Ceiling Restoration status: complete

The ceiling details in the main arch had faded severely since 1928. Many of the details and images were no longer visible. This restoration project brought back the original detail and luster of the painted mudejar ceiling in the Main Arch of the Courthouse. The cost of this project was $67,000. Project completed May 1, 2009 Full funding for this project was generously provided by the Pearl Chase Society.

Donation and Framing of Van Cina Fiesta Celebration Mural status: complete

This mural by artist Theodore Van Cina was generously donated to the Courthouse by the Legacy Foundation by The Bremer Foundation. The title of the mural is El Funeral del Gobernador Jose Figueroa. The mural is now hung on the second floor alongside four other murals by the same artist.

The value of this generous donation is $10,000. Additionally another $5,600 was donated anonymously to pay for the restoration of the painting prior to hanging it in the Courthouse. This project was completed in 2006.
